This technique uses light which is transmitted through tissue to look at collagen fiber alignment. tQPLI has been used to map region specific collagen alignment and mechanics of tendons and ligaments.

Test Setup

The typical test setup includes a light source at the bottom followed by a linear polarizer and quarter wave plate. This light passes through the tissue and resulting light is acquired and analyzed by the bio inspired polarization camera.

Representative Sample

Example of fiber alignment data from an anteromedial (AM) anterior cruciate ligament bundle: grayscale, degree of linear polarization (DoLP) and angle of polarization (AoP) images of a 40-year-old male sample at zero, transition, and linear strain states during ramp-to-failure. Note: the horizontal axis of the image corresponds to 90°

DoLP and AoP

Alignment is quantified using parameters that describe alignment direction (AoP) and strength of alignment in that direction (DoLP).
